our mission

The athens.5Glink initiative was launched with the aim to enable, in an integrated large-scale end-to-end testbed, the experimentation on 5G and future network technologies. Athens.5Glink will be openly accessible to the 5G community for real-life demonstration, validation and assessment of cutting-edge technologies.

our team

We have formed a team of five organisations with strong background and interest in 5G research and experimentation. The National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" is the biggest research centre in engineering and applied sciences in Greece. The Municipality of Egaleo (western Athens) is increasingly active in R&D activities around "connected cities" COSMOTE is the biggest telecom operator in Greece (mobile and landline network). ORION Innovations is a highly innovative SME with deep knowledge of cutting-edge software network technologies. UBITECH is also a highly innovative SME with expertise on the design and implementation of intelligent orchestration mechanisms.

our sites

Athens.5Glink currently involves two main sites, planning to add more in the near future. The campus of NCSR "Demokritos", in north-east Athens, is a 150-acre area, combining indoor and outdoor environments, covered by five software-driven 5G wireless nodes and supported by an optical backbone. The stadium of Egaleo, in west Athens, is going to be an actual "field" testbed, supporting a wide variety of real-life scenarios, ranging from massive MTC to flash crowd events.

our technologies

Athens.5Glink is planned to be a neutral infrastructure, able to accommodate a multitude of vendors and technologies. The expertise of the team is mainly in software network innovations, including SDN/NFV, edge computing and software-driven small cells.

our 5G legacy

The athens.5Glink team already has a strong presence in the EU 5G PPP programme, with its members actively participating in 14 Phase1/Phase2 5G projects: SESAME, SONATA, COHERENT, 5G-Xhaul, CHARISMA, 5GESSENCE, 5GTANGO, IoRL, MATILDA, 5G-PICTURE, 5G-PHOS, 5G-MEDIA, SLICENET and BlueSpace - also maintaining a strong liaison with most key European players and R&D initiatives in the 5G landscape.

The projects and organisations mentioned above have received funding from the "Horizon 2020" research and innovation programme of the European Union
